Transport & Infrastructure
Connectivity and accessibility are vital to the success of any region, but the Black Country's geographical location at the centre of Britain's motorway network means that the local transport infrastructure presents both opportunities and threats to local businesses. At present the transport infrastructure in the Black Country is a major barrier to our economic competitiveness.
The Black Country's two inter-city railway stations provide regular and speedy access to the capital and other UK cities. Yet connectivity across the Black Country itself is hampered by lack of infrastructure, unreliable journey times and congestion. The M5 and M6 motorways that run through the Black Country are some of the most used and congested roads in Europe. Congestion across the West Midlands costs businesses an estimated £2.2bn per annum, a cost likely to rise as congestion worsens. As the local economy and population grows, it is vital that investment in transport infrastructure does not diminish.
Black Country Chamber lobbies for improvements to all forms of transport, particularly the motorway network, local road infrastructure and the development of public transport across the three boroughs and the city. Our membership across the breadth of industry sectors allows us to work closely with key partners in the aviation, road, haulage, and rail industries and at all levels of influence, from central Government to local service operators.
The Chamber represents members by identifying the transport and infrastructure issues affecting Black Country business and lobbying on their behalf. The Chamber draws on a strong member-led evidence base to influence key decision-makers at a local and national level and to keep members informed of transport policies that may affect their business.
