BCC Responds to William Hague’s Speech

Commenting on the Conservative Party’s proposal to give English MPs a veto over matters only affecting England, John Longworth, Director General at the British Chambers of Commerce said:

“The results of the Scottish referendum have triggered widespread debate surrounding the West Lothian question. There is strong support amongst English businesses for decision making powers on English-only laws to rest in the hands of English MPs.

“This proposal might increase safeguards for England in the legislative process, but the final passage of bills would still rest with the UK parliament as a whole. For many English businesses this proposal would only be seen as a stepping-stone to further reforms.”
