Charity Opportunity for Local Businesses

Boy with female reading helper 2Beanstalk are looking for the support of Black Country businesses to take part in a volunteer opportunity.

Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that recruits, vets, trains and supports volunteers to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind with their reading. Its vision is a nation of confident children who can read and grow up to lead successful lives.

Judie Aspinall, a Beanstalk volunteer, explained her experience: “I am a Beanstalk volunteer. When my mentor came to assess my progress and I asked the little girl if she would read with her in the room, of course she did and I felt so proud.  Her teachers told me that it was with my input this shy little girl who could hardly give eye contact, not only did well in the SATS but has progressed in all her subjects. I am happy to be a volunteer with Beanstalk and have the full support the team.”

In the Black Country, Beanstalk are delighted to be working with 75 schools and are supporting 267 children. However, there are still 115 children awaiting support and 34 schools would like reading helpers.

Beanstalk aims to ensure that each and every child in the Black Country has the ability and confidence to reach their true potential. This can only be achieved with the support of the local community.

Joy Harrison, Beanstalk Mentor, commented: “Very few things beat seeing children who hate reading begin to laugh and enjoy it, gain confidence, see success, and suddenly show interest in everything about life! Three years in, I still say it's one of the best jobs on the planet. The support is fantastic and the rewards are phenomenal!”

Beanstalk are currently recruiting volunteers so if you are interested in giving time to help children develop their reading skills please visit or call 0121 771 2922.
