Two ‘Top Performer' Rankings for Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital

Endoscopy teamNuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital has been named twice as a top performing hospital in the most recent NHS Partners Network (NHSPN) Report on Independent sector providers caring for NHS patients. Additionally the private Wolverhampton hospital is the first in the group of 31 Nuffield Hospitals to become JAG accredited by the Joint Medical Royal Colleges for its Endoscopy suite.

The NHSPN report provides a comparison between the performances of independent sector providers with their NHS counterparts, and looks at indicators including patient experience, clinical quality and patient outcomes and safety. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital was named twice for top rankings in hip replacement.

JAG, The Joint Advisory Group on Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, was established in 1994 by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. JAG sets standards for individual endoscopy specialists and for training and quality in endoscopy units to provide the highest quality, timely, patient-centred care. Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is the first Nuffield Health hospital to achieve JAG accreditation and was made possible by Wolverhampton’s Dr Brian McKaig, Lisa Roffey and their team.

In the NHS Partners Network Report, the hospital performed consistently highly in scores for primary hip replacement surgery, where it was found that patients had significantly improved hip functionality and reduced pain, using two different indicators; the Oxford Hip Score technique and the EQ-5DTM score. The EQ-5DTM score, developed by the EuroQol Group, is a standardised instrument for use as a measure of health outcome and has a broader base than the Oxford scores.

The figures about the Top 50 hospitals show:

  • Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital came 13th overall in health gain from primary hip replacement, scoring an average of over 23 out of 25 on the Oxford hip score which was higher than any NHS organisation.
  • For primary hip replacement on the EQ-5DTM score, again they were high scorers at 16th.

Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital Karen Pattison said:  “We are absolutely delighted to be consistently acknowledged as one of the UK’s top performers in the provision of joint replacement care. We know from feedback from our patients that the quality of care is always high and we are proud that this has been recognised by two different measures. I am also very proud of our endoscopy team achieving the JAG accreditation. Taken together, these achievements show that the care we provide at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital is on a par with any other provider in the country.”

Around 20% of all elective hip and knee replacements and gastroenterology procedures are now carried out by the independent sector. In some areas of the country this figure is far higher. As well as NHS patients, many independent sector providers also treat large numbers of privately-funded patients as well. However, the overall number of NHS patients treated by independent organisations remains a small fraction of total NHS volumes.
