Great Wyrley Schoolgirl Pulls Off Masterstroke

masterstrokeA Great Wyrley schoolgirl has pulled off a masterstroke to win a national drawing competition hosted by one of the biggest names in transport.

Eight-year-old Alicia Wilkins’ drawing of her ideal holiday was picked as the winner out of hundreds of other entries from the West Midlands in the 2015 Colour the Coach competition.

As part of the competition, children aged 5-15 from all over the country were asked to unleash their imaginations and draw a picture of their ideal holiday, with the chance to see their designs on the side of a National Express coach.

Professional artist Paul Parkin, whose gallery ‘Jinx Art’ is based in Birmingham, selected Alicia’s design as the winning entry from the West Midlands and as first prize, Alicia won a £50 cheque while her drawing was transformed into a show-stopping one-off livery on a National Express coach, which will be seen by thousands of people as it travels along the UK coach network.

As an added bonus, the UK’s largest coach operator brought the coach bearing Alicia’s picture to her school: Landywood Primary - for the whole school to admire.

Alicia, who lives in Great Wyrley with her family, was delighted after hearing she had won. She said:

“I’m so excited that my picture won and that my schoolmates got to see my design on the coach. I love drawing and I love holidays - so this competition was perfect for me!”

Landywood Primary Headteacher Andrew Clewer said:

“I’m delighted that Alicia’s excellent picture won and the whole school was thrilled to see rolling into the playground on a National Express coach. Colour the Coach is a great way for pupils to show off their creative talents and we hope to come up with another winning entry this year.”

National Express UK Coach Managing Director Tom Stables said:

“We had a fantastic array of entries from children in the West Midlands and Alicia’s design was particularly brilliant. It’s really great to see how children are inspired by their holidays and use that inspiration to show off their artistic talent.”

National Express is offering hundreds of thousands of fares from just £6 for more information or to book visit or call 08717 818181.
