Celebrating British Food Fortnight at DZG

DZG BFF1It’s harvest time and Dudley Zoological Gardens is flying the flag for homegrown delights as part of British Food Fortnight.

With more than 1,500 animals and an annual food bill topping £120,000, we have to make sure our pennies buy the very best of British produce, which is why we’re keen to support suppliers on our doorstep.

And we’re encouraging visitors to come and find out more about the work we do and why we were the first zoo in the country to sign up to the scheme, with another special offer this weekend, where children can gain entry for just £1!

Curator Richard Brown, said: “We have more than 200 animal species on site, who all have different dietary requirements, and it’s important that their food is fresh.

“We buy seasonal fruit and vegetables which we source from neighbouring counties, as we know we’ll get the best food at the best price.”

We take delivery of fruit and vegetables from Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire twice a week, cereals arrive from Staffordshire, raw meat is delivered once a month from Shropshire, while we have two deliveries a month of fresh sprats delivered direct from Poole within hours of being caught.

Richard added: “We’re encouraging visitors to come and learn more about British Food Fortnight this weekend by taking a look at our display in the Discovery Centre and hear about the different British foods our animals eat by following our daily talks programme, running throughout the day.”

There’ll also be a chance to win a creature feature, where visitors will be able to feed some of our small critters some seasonal produce by entering our fundraising raffle, with money raised going towards buying treat foods for the animals.

To gain the £1 child entry, visitors must download and print the voucher from
