Record Numbers Attend The Platinum Group Director Day as Express & Star Share Diversification Best Practice

The Platinum Group Director Day at the Express and StarDirectors from The Platinum Group manufacturing, automotive, logistics, freight & transport sector met together with directors from the newly formed Platinum Group Service Sector and Chamber Patrons to discuss the need to adapt and diversify to compete against the fast pace of change being faced by businesses across all sectors.

The Platinum Group hold quarterly best practice events for their senior leaders where they are able to work collaboratively to learn from each other and develop their leadership skills in a collaborative and supportive environment.

This month Express & Star hosted the meeting to share their experience of diversification over their rich heritage, which has seen communication media revolutionised with the invention of radio, television, computers, the internet and social media.

Graeme Clifford, Print Managing Director, shared how the company had diversified its business model amid the rapid changes in its industry, launching new businesses built upon its strong brands and long heritage and how this can relate to any company in The Platinum Group. Members then heard from Lucy Cashmore, Operations Director of Star Employment Services who spoke about the importance of delivering the trust and integrity associated with the Express & Star brand, when developing the new recruitment arm of the business. Finally, Andy Hill, Digital Managing Director spoke about being able to offer affordable and measurable digital services and promotional opportunities to all businesses within the region whatever their size and budget. He also spoke about the challenge of innovating in such a fast paced environment and the importance of not being afraid of failure, as without it you were unlikely to make any real step changes.

The morning culminated with editor Keith Harrison providing a guided tour of the newsroom, explaining how the journalists work across print and digital to bring the latest news.

Chris Leggett, Head of Communication at Express & Star, said: “It was great to be able to welcome so many members of The Platinum Group today and to share our experiences and the values of integrity and community that are at the heart of our business.”

Gail Arnold, Head of The Platinum Group, said: “It was a fantastic morning and we have received very positive feedback from the Group. It’s not every day that you get a behind the scenes tour of a busy newsroom by the editor and the insight gained from today can be applied to any business, whatever their industry or size.”

The Platinum Group is designed for senior business leaders in the region with the emphasis on developing leadership skills, sharing best practice and working with like-minded people.  Keeping abreast of change and adapting their businesses to gain competitive advantage is a real challenge for leaders today. Peer-to-peer learning and best practice sharing play an important role in developing the skills necessary to move their businesses forward and to contribute to the economic growth of the region.
