Medical Secretaries Benefit from West Midlands Hospital Workshop

Medical Secretaries Benefit From Hospital WorkshopMedical Secretaries from across the region boosted their knowledge at a special West Midlands Hospital workshop.

The ERS Medical Secretary event gave secretaries working at a range of GP practices a valuable insight into increasing NHS and Private Referrals to the hospital.

Maria Poade, GP Liaison Officer for West Midlands Hospital, co-ordinated the workshop and Ramsay Health Care’s National Choose and Book Manager Victoria Elliott was the guest speaker.

The workshop gave an overview of the wide range of services offered at West Midlands Hospital and a key focus of the session was the Choose and Book NHS e-Referral Service.

Medical Secretaries were also able to ask questions, share their experiences and network at the event.

The eReferral service is a secure and free NHS appointment booking facility allowing patients to choose the hospital they wish to go to for the surgery they require.

Patients can book, change or cancel their outpatients appointments online, by phone or at their local GP surgery.

The user friendly service provides patients with information and appointment dates at shortlisted healthcare providers which are best suited to them.

West Midlands Hospital accepts patients through NHS referrals along with insured patients and private patients who can pay for their treatment up front.

It is one of the leading private hospitals in the Midlands region and provides a range of services including cosmetic surgery, spinal surgery, orthopaedic surgeries and eye treatments such as cataract surgery.

Maria Poade said: “The workshop gave medical secretaries useful updates on the NHS eReferral service which are relevant to them in their daily roles.

“We had a good turnout of medical secretaries from across the West Midlands and events like this aim to provide them with a better understanding of the referral process and the opportunity to find out more about all our services at West Midlands Hospital.”

Delegates also learnt more about the advice and guidance which is available to GP surgeries so they can channel patients towards specific surgeries more effectively.

Diane Richards, Medical Secretary at Wychbury Medical Centre in Stourbridge was one of the attendees.

Diane said: “It was really useful to gain updates on the referral process and find out more about West Midlands Hospital and the advice and guidance which is available to us so patients are directed towards the most appropriate service.”

Guests were also given a whistle stop tour of the hospital before lunch and they also received goody bags containing gifts, useful advice and guidance leaflets and other hospital information.

Victoria Elliott added: “This event aimed to support Medical Secretaries and help them with the eReferral process to make hospital services more easily accessible.

“It was pleasing to see a good cross section of secretaries attend from across the region and they were able to see the hospital and its fantastic facilities for themselves.”
