National Express Recognised for Leadership on the Real Living Wage

Madi Pilgrim NX Bus HR Director left and Peter Coates NX Bus MD rightNational Express UK Bus has received a Special Recognition Award for its leadership and promotion of the real Living Wage.

At a recent West Midlands Citizens Mayoral Assembly in Birmingham, Citizens UK presented the region’s largest bus operator with a special award for leading the way in paying and promoting the real Living Wage.

National Express UK Bus became an accredited Living Wage Foundation employer in January 2016, making it one of the largest Living Wage employers in the West Midlands, and the first private transport group to commit to paying its employees the higher, voluntary rate of pay.

As a result of National Express’ commitment, hundreds of staff aged 18 and over received an immediate pay increase to the higher, voluntary Living Wage rate, which is over £1 more than the National Living Wage and which only became law for over 25s in April 2016.

As well as pledging to pay all UK employees the real Living Wage, the bus operator has ensured the same for all agency and contracted staff.

The bus operator went even further to promote the real Living Wage by adding stickers to its fleet of vehicles, clearly explaining to passengers what the real Living Wage is and the difference it makes to people’s lives.

Becca Kirkpatrick from Citizens UK said: “This award is much deserved. National Express is blazing a trail in the private sector by not only accrediting as a Living Wage Employer, but going beyond that in making sure that all passengers are aware of what a difference the real Living Wage makes.”

Peter Coates, Managing Director National Express UK Bus said: "Our staff do a great job helping hundreds of thousands of people get to work and school and to see their family and friends every day. We are always looking at what more we can do to recognise this hard work and our accreditation as a Living Wage Foundation employer in the UK testifies to our determination to be the best possible employer.”

Sarah Vero, Director Living Wage Foundation said: “National Express was the first private transport group to accredit and we hope the leadership that they have shown will lay down a marker in the transport sector. We hope that more well-known brands, and increasingly their customers, will see the benefits of the Living Wage in their communities. The voluntary Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living; going above the statutory minimums and rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.”
