A.F. Blakemore Volunteers Litter Pick in Local Community

A.F. Blakemore Litter at Pick Rough Wood 27062017An army of more than 300 volunteers from across A.F. Blakemore & Son Ltd have spent a week litter picking as part of the company’s Environmental Focus Week (26th- 30th June).

In the West Midlands, 100 employee volunteers from A.F. Blakemore’s Willenhall head office and local depots donated more than 700 hours to cleaning up areas at Rough Wood Chase in Walsall and Fibbersley Nature Reserve in Willenhall.

Also in the local area, 22 colleagues from nine Blakemore Retail SPAR stores including Brewood, Coseley, Gornal Wood, Lapwood, Lawnswood, Russell’s Hall Road, Wollaston, Wombourne, and Wordsley Green took to the streets to tidy up areas within their communities.

The Environmental Focus Week forms part of a series of commemorative events to celebrate A.F. Blakemore & Son Ltd’s 100 years in business and the importance of growing a sustainable business for the next 100 years.

A.F. Blakemore & Son Commercial Director Caoire Blakemore commented: “As part of our Environmental Week initiatives, we encouraged employees across England and Wales to get out into their local communities and litter pick.

“Not only will this impact the community and environment immediately, but we’ll also be converting the amount of litter collected throughout the week into trees, which we will plant later on in the year.”

Walsall Council Head of Clean and Green Mark Holden said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has taken the time out of their busy working week to help clean up their community. I would like to thank all volunteers for all their help; they have made a real difference to their local environment and their community.”

A.F. Blakemore & Son Community Affairs Officer Liz Bell added: “I am delighted to see the work our volunteers achieved during the week. As a business with strong links in the local community, it is great for our employees to get out of their normal work environment and work as a team.

“I believe that volunteering in the community is a fantastic way for our employees to learn new skills that they can take back to the workplace, and I would encourage more businesses to get involved.”
