Midlands Based Training Provider Supports Businesses Through Apprenticeship Changes

Performance Through People, a training provider with over 40 years’ experience of delivering apprenticeships and staff training across the midlands and nationally, are helping business both large and small to navigate their way through the changes to apprenticeship funding.

Following the changes on 1st May 2017, companies with an annual payroll of over £3 million will have begun to pay the apprenticeship levy and can now use these levy payments to fund apprenticeship training for current employees or new recruits. PTP have been working with a number of levy paying organisations to explore the options available to them and work out how to get the best return on investment from their levy spend.

Employers who do not have to pay the levy are also expected to contribute to the costs of training apprentices through co-investment – which sees the employer pay 10% of costs with the remainder coming from government funding. The only exception to this is employers with fewer than 50 staff taking on an apprentice aged 16 to 18.

Another change which could impact on businesses of all sizes is the new eligibility criteria for apprentices, which mean that people with previous qualifications at all levels, including degrees, can complete an apprenticeship, as long as it is significantly different to their previous learning. PTP are already seeing a lot of interest from both graduates and their employers.

Apprenticeships are seen as key in ensuring young people have opportunities to enter the world of work and progress their careers. This is reflected in incentive payments of £1000 which are available to all companies taking on an apprentice aged 16 to 18, regardless of the size of the business. Companies who want to support the development of new talent in this way can take advantage of PTP’s search and select service which helps employers to recruit the right apprentice for their business, taking care of advertising, shortlisting and arranging interviews.
