Employers Recognised for Sterling Support to the Armed Forces

15 employers from across the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire have been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award in celebration of their commitment to support the armed forces.

The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) celebrates and recognises UK employers who actively demonstrate and pledge their support to Defence and the armed forces community. The scheme encompasses bronze, silver and gold awards for companies who advocate their support and align their values with the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Silver Award is awarded particularly to those employers who have signed the Armed Forces Covenant and have demonstrated and communicated supportive behaviour.

The regional Silver Award winners for 2017 are Aston University Engineering College; Briggs Equipment; Burton & South Derbyshire College; Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce; High Speed 2 (HS2) Ltd; ide Systems; Lord Combustion Services; Mitchells & Butlers; RS4 Security; The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust; Stoke City Football Club; The Sentinel; University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust; Warwickshire Police and West Midlands Police.

Chief Constable Dave Thompson from West Midlands Police said of the force’s drive to achieve silver status: “This is a fantastic programme for us to be a part of, as a police service, an employer and as a member of the wider West Midlands community.

“Having achieved a bronze award last year, it is great that our continuing efforts to support the armed forces community are being recognised and we have swiftly attained the next level.

“We are proud to support those people who have made sacrifices on behalf of the nation and will continue to offer support in both the workplace and wider community.”

Silver Award winners Mitchells & Butlers commented: "We are absolutely delighted and extremely proud to be awarded the silver level award. We are very proud to support and recruit from the armed forces, not only because of the important work they do but also because we believe that many of the skills gained in the armed forces are very much suited to the hospitality industry; such as leadership, communication, work ethic, discipline and loyalty.”

Siamha Butt, Regional Employer Engagement Director for the West Midland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association said of the awards:  “We would like to congratulate the region’s Silver Award winners for their outstanding support and commitment towards those who serve and their families.

“The West Midland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association has strong links with the region’s businesses and recognise that they are an integral part to the overall Defence aims.  This year’s Silver Award winners have demonstrated a positive stance by dedicating their time and resources to promote the armed forces, and this continued support has provided fantastic opportunities for our Reservists, Service leavers and Cadets Force Adult Volunteers.”

The Award Winners will receive their certificates at a regional silver awards ceremony to be held in October.
