National Express Judged Top for Safety

NXWM engineering team at Birmingham Central garage 1National Express West Midlands has been judged the safest transport company in the country.

The British Safety Council has just awarded the Birmingham-based bus operator five stars for health and safety. The company’s score of 97.4% was the highest score of any transport company in 2017 and is in the top 20% of all five-star scores.

National Express’ Head of Safety, Paul Harley, said: “This is a fantastic result. The British Safety Council visit lasts for days and they do a full audit - they look under every rock.

“Our Driving Out Harm campaign focuses on changing the way everyone at National Express thinks about safety and how we all behave. Every one of us is expected to flag up and learn from every incident - from collisions on the road to the trip hazards presented by crisp packets.

“Driving Out Harm has been a real success - in the last five years, we have halved the amount of injuries and the costs of safety-related incidents.”

The British Safety Council auditor assessed the bus operator on its leadership, risk management and how well a health and safety culture is embedded in all its ways of working. A company must score 92% and above to get five stars.
