Dudley Zoological Gardens Offer Permanent Positions to Apprentices

DZG new keepersCongratulations to apprentices, Harry Upton and Mary Taylor, who have landed full-time positions at Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG).

The pair have secured their dream jobs as trainee keepers after impressing zoo bosses with their hardworking attitude since joining as apprentices at the start of the year.

Harry, from Halesowen, said: “I’m immensely happy. When I was told I’d got the job it was easily one of the happiest moments of my life.”

The 21 year-old, who works on the zoo's farm and has recently moved into on-site staff quarters, added: “I really didn’t expect it and I was beginning to worry I wouldn’t be able to secure anything at the end of the 12-month apprenticeship.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity of working with different kinds of animals during my career, although for the moment, I’m very happy to be continuing working with the camels!”

Mary, from Stourbridge, said: “It’s so amazing, as zoo keeping is something I’ve always wanted to do.

“I never thought I would get the original apprenticeship, let alone a full-time position in the same year. I’m very happy.”

And the 17 year-old has recently moved from the bird section to join the ungulates team.

Mary added: “It’s very different to birds, but I’m enjoying the new challenges and new animals I’m really enjoying working with the reindeer, especially the youngsters who are proving to be very cheeky.”

DZG Curator, Richard Brown, said: “Both Harry and Mary have proved to be valuable members of staff since they started the apprenticeship and we were delighted to offer them full-time positions.

“We wish them well with their future zoo keeping careers.”
