Creative Black Country Hosts the Art Village at Europe’s Biggest Asian Mela

The ZEE Sandwell and Birmingham Mela, the largest Mela festival in Europe, takes place in Sandwell on the 14th and 15th July with Creative Black Country hosting a weekend of creative fun as part of the new Arts Village. Engaging art workshops, live painting, a TukTuk photo booth and brand new madcap performance ‘Chappal’ are all taking place for free, alongside top name music and dance acts from South Asia.

On Saturday 14th July the Mela Partnership (an initiative to bring great quality outdoor performance to the seven UK Mela’s in the network) will present the Midland premier of its latest show ‘Chappal - The Case of the Missing Sandal’ at Victoria Park.

‘Chappal’ (meaning ‘sandal’ in Hindi/Urdu), has been created by London-based Bureau of Silly Ideas and performing arts company Nutkhut, and tells the tale of Aunt-ji’s favourite antique sandal that goes missing, resulting in a bumbling international investigation between Inspector Daal and Sergeant Sole.

Ajay Chhabra, Artistic Director of Nutkhut said: “This fantastic show is an opportunity to bring a new work to a family audience. ‘Chappal’ is playful and silly and draws on the creativity of the best of two UK outdoor companies. The show connects Mela audiences with the wider outdoor sector, which will resonate with all audiences.”

Visitors to the Mela will also be able to get involved in Creative Black Country’s new Arts Village; a space to be creative and inspired with a full weekend programme of free activities. Artists will create a new piece of work live and they’ll be plenty to join in with including Rajasthani tote bag, Chumki and Mandala making, as well as art installations.

The ZEE Sandwell & Birmingham Mela is the biggest Asian music festival in Europe with 70,000 attendees. Music from stars Shide Boss, Miss Pooja, Ali Zafar and Roshan Prince will be accompanied by plenty of dance performance, tasty food and traditional arts and crafts to bring the sights, sounds and spicy aromas of South Asia to Victoria Park, Smethwick on 14 & 15 July 2018.
