Denise Lewis Visits New Cross Hospital for BBC Programme

Picture4Staff at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) were given the starring role in a new programme as part of a BBC series celebrating the NHS’s 70th birthday.

New Cross Hospital welcomed Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis through its doors for the filming of an episode for the five part series ‘Matron, Medicine and Me’.

‘Matron, Medicine and Me’ explores how the NHS has changed over the years, with each episode featuring a different celebrity who has a personal link with the NHS.

Fern Britton and Si King were also among those featured on the programme.

For Denise, the link to the NHS came from her grandmother who worked as a nurse at New Cross for 40 years. Her grandmother was also treated in the hospital as a patient towards the end of her life.

Denise was filmed visiting the wards and speaking to staff and patients as she tried to find out more about what life was like for her grandmother.

She explored what has changed at the hospital since her grandmother worked there, getting a glimpse into the Trust’s Heart and Lung Centre and witnessing the cutting-edge surgery the Trust provides.

Denise visited the ward her grandmother was treated on and listened to stories of life in the NHS today from patients and staff.

Ann-Marie Cannaby, Chief Nurse at RWT, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome Denise and showcase the brilliant and innovative work that we do here at The Royal Wolverhampton Trust.”

The episode featuring New Cross Hospital will air on Friday, July 20th, at 9.15am on BBC One.

There will be a special showing for staff at New Cross Hospital’s WMI lecture theatre at 9.15am on July 20th.
