Chamber Charity of the Year - Black Country Women's Aid
For 40 years, Black Country Women’s Aid (BCWA) has been supporting victims and survivors of domestic abuse and other interpersonal violence to escape from violence, recover from trauma and start again.
At Black Country Women’s Aid (BCWA), they listen, support and care.
Grace and Freddie’s Story
BCWA helps women, men, and children from across our region, people like Grace and Freddie*:
Freddie is 11 and has lived with domestic violence his entire life. His mother Grace has been abused by more than one partner, including Freddie’s father.
Freddie has always worried about his mum. His anxiety around leaving her to go to school meant that he found it difficult to focus in lessons and make friends.
BCWA helped Freddie to open up about his feelings and manage his worries. With Grace, he attended a support group where mothers and children can talk about their experiences with other families. This helped them to process their trauma together and rebuild their relationship.
Grace feels that BCWA’s support has helped her family to heal. Freddie now understands that what happened to him and his mum was not okay. He has moved on to secondary school where he has made lots of new friends and has formed positive relationships with his teachers.
