Kickstart Scheme

The Government recently announced a new Kickstart Scheme, which aims to provide funding to employers to create new 6-month job placements for young people who are currently on Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment.

How the Kickstart Scheme works

From November, as a business, you will be able to access funding for each job placement to cover:
• 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week.
• The associated employer National Insurance contributions.
• Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions.
In addition, there will be up to £1,500 in extra funding to support young people to build their experience and help them move into sustained employment after they have completed their Kickstart Scheme funded job.
If employers are looking to recruit fewer than 30 placements, they will need to use an intermediary to help them with the registration process.

The Chamber's role in the Kickstart Scheme

If employers are looking to recruit fewer than 30 placements, they will need to use an intermediary to help them with the registration process.
The Black Country Chamber of Commerce (BCCC) is already working with a number of businesses looking to get involved in the scheme.
The Chamber is planning to act as one of these intermediaries. We will provide support during registration, consider how to maximise the £1,500 to aid the young person’s development, and work with the employer and Job Centre Plus to make sure things go smoothly.
The BCCC will also be working closely with the West Midlands Combined Authority as a trusted partner, making sure that the scheme is managed well at a regional level and delivers for the business and the young person.

Why choose the Chamber as an intermediary?

Businesses are likely to be approached by a large number of prospective intermediaries over the coming weeks.
The BCCC's legacy of supporting and connecting businesses - as well as our relationships with agencies and stakeholders - makes us the ideal partner for the Kickstart Scheme. You can be confident in our support.
The Chamber will leverage the power and value of our network to make sure decision-makers hear employers' voices. Our goal is to give young people the best possible experience and keep the Black Country region open for business.
