When it comes to business I’ve done my time and got more than a quarter of a century of experience behind me. But despite my commitment to learning, progression and personal growth - there is one skill that I’ve always struggled with. Time management. I’ve done all the courses and read all the books. I’ve bought all the diaries, planners and calendars. I’ve tried systems and processes and plans…I’ve found some things that work for me and some things that don’t - but no matter what system I put in place, I’ve never managed to quite get my emails under control. I thought I had it managed, but as the office is opening up again and I’ve been spending more time here than at home, I’ve noticed that I’d slipped back into some old bad habits. All the work I’d done to delegate tasks and take control of my schedule seemed to have gone out of the window. I was back to being chained to my laptop - or more specifically - my email inbox. Now, as you know, my first job was in freight. I started out in the office as a general dogsbody and worked my way up through the years. And there’s one very important thing about freight forwarding - the speed at which you reply to enquiries matters! Here at Millennium, our target is to reply to your quotes within two hours or less. That’s not some gimmick. We really do it. Because I know that if we dilly dally and take too long to respond then the job will go to someone else. We’ll have missed it. So back in the day when I was working as an employee, it was drummed into me that I MUST stay on top of my inbox. Every email must be seen and replied to as quickly as possible - or the opportunity would be lost. Now, as they say - old habits die hard! So it doesn’t matter that it’s no longer my job to manage quotes and bookings as I have a team for that nowadays, but I still find myself constantly checking my inbox and replying to emails all day long. But I think I’ve found the answer. A little book called The Email Warrior. It’s a quick read - I finished it in just a few hours - and I have to say I am pretty chuffed with the results. My inbox is cleared, my scheduled managed and I’m far more productive already!
