Black Country’s Business Heroes honoured in dazzling digital award celebration

The Black Country Chamber of Commerce crowned the winners of its 2020 Business Awards on Friday 13 November in a stunning, online live-streamed ceremony hosted by actor and comedian, Aaron James.

The Awards, headline partnered by the University of Wolverhampton, took a shift in direction earlier in the year when the Chamber decided to utilise the annual business awards to recognise the work and endeavours of the businesses and professionals in the Black Country who have gone the extra mile to help with the Coronavirus crisis.

It was the culmination of the Chamber’s ongoing ‘Business Heroes’ campaign that has been running since the pandemic hit, where stories of the valiant efforts by Black Country businesses and people to support the national effort, started to emerge.

The winners of the twelve ‘Business Heroes’ categories were announced amid a packed afternoon of compelling entertainment that included Black Country comedian and musician, Johnny Cole; Britain’s Got Talent Finalists, the Rock Choir; and magician, Matt Fell.

The Awards attracted an extremely high level of submissions, but the ‘heroes’ that eventually scooped the prestigious title and award were:

• Large Business Hero sponsored by MHA MacIntyre Hudson – SIPS Education

• Small Business Hero sponsored by Nant Ltd. – Cox & Plant

• Family Business Hero sponsored by CK Chartered Accountants – Robinson Brothers Ltd

Alongside the heroes’ categories, the Chamber dedicated a special ‘lifetime achievement’ award to Roy Richardson, whose company Richardson Developments was founded more than 60 years ago and is known for landmark developments that include the Merry Hill shopping centre and the Waterfront business park in Dudley.

Corin Crane, chief executive of the Black Country Chamber said: “There has been such an amazing amount of work done in the Black Country to help fight the coronavirus locally, regionally and on a national level and it’s great that we have been able to acknowledge and celebrate our businesses and professionals for their valiant efforts. The afternoon has certainly been highly entertaining and one that will be remembered for a long time to come.

“I am also pleased that we were able to use this opportunity to recognise Roy Richardson for his lifetime achievement in business, and to the Black Country alike. Roy and his family business have been a familiar part of the Black Country for six decades and have made a huge contribution to the community in many ways, over the years.

“A massive thank you also goes to all our 2020 sponsors and partners - in particular our headline partner, the University of Wolverhampton whose collective support has enabled the Awards to happen.”

Professor Nazira Karodia, Pro-Vice Chancellor Regional Engagement at the University of Wolverhampton said: “We were delighted to continue supporting the Black Country Chamber of Commerce by being the headline sponsors for their annual awards, which this year focused on business heroes.

“It gave all of us the opportunity to recognise the extent to which businesses in the region have rallied throughout the pandemic.

“I had the honour of announcing three winners during the virtual event. The entries have been of an incredibly high standard this year, and the judging panels, which have included staff from the University, had a challenge to select the winners.

“Behind the winners are stories of self-less contributions, acting when there was no obligation to do so, personal sacrifices, working in difficult conditions, and adaptability during the pandemic.

“It was fantastic to hear all of the amazing work that has been undertaken during the pandemic, much of it behind the scenes, and have the chance to celebrate it.

Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists."

Alongside the University of Wolverhampton, other sponsors and partners have included:

MHA MacIntyre Hudson (Large Business Hero of the Year); Nant Ltd (Small Business Hero of the Year); CK Chartered Accountants (Family Business Hero of the Year); Forresters Patent and Trademark Attorneys (Start-up Business Hero of the Year); FMS (Business Hero of the Year); Walsall College (Outstanding Collaboration & Partnership), Walsall Council (International Trade Business Hero ), Black Country Business Festival (Outstanding Key Worker) and Black Country Business Club (Retail Resilience).
