Black Country Chamber, along with Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, are pleased to announce a partnership with Netcom Training to investigate digital skills gaps in the West Midlands.

Research by the Business Commission West Midlands found that in 2024, 52% of firms were expecting to increase their investment in technology and artificial intelligence, with AI and digitisation identified as one of five key levers for economic growth.

This new project will build on existing work, including that of the Business Commission and the West Midlands and Warwickshire Local Skills Improvement Plan, in seeking to understand where businesses are in their digitisation journey, the capabilities and skills required to facilitate further digitisation, and how we can collaboratively overcome barriers to further digitisation in the region.

Black Country Chamber will be looking to gather insights on these topics through our upcoming Quarterly Economic Survey, as well as a focus group with employers in the Black Country.

The Mastering the Future with Digital Skills report, summarising the findings of the research will be published later in the year.

Sarah Moorhouse, Chief Executive at Black Country Chamber of Commerce said, “Emerging technologies offer a vital opportunity for businesses across all industries and sizes to enhance productivity and foster economic growth. However, it is essential that we collaborate to ensure the region develops the necessary digital skills to fully capitalize on this potential. This research aims to assess where businesses currently stand in their digital transformation, identify their present and future digital skill requirements, and explore the most effective ways for the region to provide these skills to promote digital prosperity.”

Kevin Vashi, Managing Director of Netcom Training said, “"In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, equipping individuals with essential digital skills is not just a necessity - it’s a fundamental driver of economic growth, innovation, and inclusivity. Our mission is to bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, has the tools and confidence to thrive in the digital era."

The Chamber’s next Quarterly Economic Survey launches on 10th February 2025.
