The Wrens Nest Tunnel project is a transformative capital initiative to reopen and reimagine one of the UK’s most significant geological and industrial heritage sites.

Our vision is to create a world-class visitor experience that connects people to place through nature, heritage, and innovation.

To reconnect communities with the extraordinary natural and industrial heritage of Wrens Nest through a bold, immersive visitor experience that celebrates geology, canal history, and ecological restoration. By reopening the Wrens Nest Tunnel, we will create a unique journey through time — from fossil-rich landscapes to underground waterways — inspiring curiosity, learning, and pride in place.

What the Project Will Deliver


At completion, visitors will enjoy a seamless, immersive journey that includes:

- A bi-directional, multi modal visitor experience comprising of:

  • A canal boat tour through our already existing and well established Dudley Tunnel Network of tunnels, caverns and basins.
  • An underground walking route along the reopened Wrens Nest Tunnel including exploration of historic waterways and geological formations and interactive exhibits that bring to life 428 million years of geological history.
  • A funicular railway connecting the underground Cathedral Cavern to the Wrens Nest Visitor Centre & Seven Sisters Mine; 70ft to the surface.
  • Fossil discovery zones and interpretation spaces for schools and families.
  • Free walking routes through the Wrens Nest National Nature Reserve back to Dudley Canal & Caverns.

- A comprehensive community engagement programme, connecting our communities through time, place and experiences.

  • Workshops with schools in the Wrens Nest & Priory area.
  • Resident engagement programme.
  • Community engagement events to increase community cohesion.

- A positive economic impact to the Black Country, establishing it as a legitimate tourist destination, unlocking the overnight economy and hundreds of millions of pound of direct and indirect benefit.

Phased Delivery


Phase 1: Feasibility & Team Formation (2025–2026)

- Recruit a dedicated project team (project manager, heritage consultant, engagement lead)

- Commission feasibility studies (engineering, ecology, access, visitor experience)

- Develop a masterplan and stakeholder engagement strategy

- Launch public awareness and advocacy campaign

Phase 2: Design & Development (2026–2027)

- Deliver detailed designs for infrastructure and visitor experience

- Begin phased construction and environmental assessments

- Deepen partnerships with local authorities, schools, and community groups

Phase 3 to 5 are to be defined by Phase 1 & 2
