Domestic abuse; it's everyone's business.

For survivors of domestic abuse leaving a refuge, unemployment can be a major barrier to rebuilding their lives. Without a stable income, access to safe housing and essential resources for themselves and their children often remains out of reach. Secure employment is a supportive environment is not just a financial necessity – it is a vital step toward recovery, helping survivors regain confidence, independence, and a sense of control over their future. When I was sacked, it took away my identity, my sense of belonging and direction. That was the worst part of my journey, as a victim of domestic abuse, because I loved my job and worked really hard for it. For me, if anyone should have able to see the difference in my behaviour it was my boss. I ust anted him to listen to me. I didn’t need him to fix anything, or rescue me or tell me what to do, but I was looking for a bit of comfort or reassurance that everything was going to be okay. Employers don’t have to get directly involved, they don’t have to become counsellors or fix anyone, but to be able to believe and listen to an employee who might be experiencing domestic abuse, you need to know their ABC’s. My ABC framework is a simple, memorable tool, designed to help employers spot the early warning signs of coercive control before it escalates. It is not a diagnostic tool but a prompt for further inquiry, early intervention and prevention. It is a practical way to make coercive control more visible in plain sight and encourage proactive support.

My work is personal evidence based, and truly focused on the issue, whilst putting survivors at the heart of what I do. If your business would like help to create a safer working environment for employees who make a domestic abuse disclosure, I would love to hear from you.

Domestic abuse; it’s everyone’s business.
