Always check the details within your contract.

When renewing or signing a new mobile phone contract, businesses should carefully consider key questions that could save them thousands. Given the essential role mobile phones play within most companies, it's crucial to thoroughly review contract terms and negotiate the best possible deal.

Leading headline on BBC stated ‘I feel sick about signing that phone contract’

The article exposes how a telecommunications company deceived a client, Mr. Toplass, about the terms of a business contract. While the company briefly outlined the contract as a 2-year agreement, it was actually a 7-year commitment, suggesting the company may not have been fully transparent.

"I feel sick every time I think about it," says Paul Toplass. "I've been in business for over 25 years. We've never experienced anything like this." Mr Toplass, who runs a pest control firm, says he was misled into signing a business contract for three phones that he is now "powerless" to break free from. It has left him "being asked to pay over £10,000" for the phones he believes are worth less than £200 each.

Key questions to consider before signing a mobile service contract

  • How long is the contract term?
  • Is the monthly price fixed, tiered, or variable?
  • Will the contract price remain the same throughout the term?
  • Do I have a spending cap? If not, please include one.
  • Will I own the handsets or be leasing them?
