As the festive spirit begins to permeate the air, many of us are already indulging in the joy and warmth of the season. From twinkling lights to vibrant celebrations, it’s a time for togetherness and cheer. However, as businesses across the Black Country join in the festivities, it's crucial to strike a balance between celebrating responsibly and staying mindful of the broader challenges that lie ahead.

The festive season often brings a surge in energy use, translating into significant costs for businesses, particularly as energy prices remain volatile. Beyond financial implications, increased energy consumption also impacts carbon reduction targets, requiring urgent attention as regulatory deadlines loom.

With 2024 just around the corner, businesses must prepare for several critical regulatory changes:

  1. ESOS Action Plan Deadlines: The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) Phase 3 compliance requires businesses to audit their energy use and implement actionable steps for energy reduction.
  2. CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive): Starting next year, larger businesses will face stricter sustainability reporting requirements, emphasising transparency in carbon reduction efforts.
  3. CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism): This regulation will impact businesses importing carbon-intensive goods, adding a cost element to non-compliance with decarbonisation initiatives.

Preparation is key in the face of these challenges. Businesses need to prioritise energy efficiency and sustainability strategies to meet regulatory requirements and stay competitive in an increasingly environmentally conscious marketplace. Proactive steps could include conducting energy audits, investing in energy-efficient technologies, and collaborating with local initiatives aimed at decarbonisation.

At Pro Enviro, we’re proud to support businesses in the Black Country through tailored decarbonisation programs and energy audits that help reduce costs and emissions while ensuring compliance with upcoming regulations. This festive season, let’s celebrate responsibly and prepare for a sustainable, low-carbon future together.

By the way, if you haven't heard of the Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS), this is the chance your business could apply for FREE Energy Saving Grants up to £100,000 and receive its FREE Energy Audit by Pro Enviro Limited.

What does BEAS offer?

The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) is a pilot programme to help businesses save money and drive growth by providing free energy assessments and 50% match-funded grants.

After registering online, an audit will be conducted to identify areas for improving energy efficiency and reducing costs. Businesses can then apply for a grant to invest in energy improvement measures administered by their local authority. No payback is required, and BEAS is part of a broader government initiative to reduce carbon emissions nationwide.

Energy improvement measures include but are not limited to*:

  • Ventilation (fans, distribution, destratification fans)
  • Heating (replacement boilers, burners, heat pumps)
  • Energy-efficient lighting (LED, controls, sensors)
  • Refrigeration
  • Insulation
  • Recycling and waste (compactors, balers, and crushers)
  • Water management

*Solar panels are not available as part of the BEAS programme. But you can still apply and receive it under the SPF* (Shared Prosperity Fund).
