infectionpreventionteamThe Royal Wolverhampton Trust's (RWT) Infection Prevention team (IP) has been shortlisted for a national award.

The IP team were shortlisted in the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) Team of the Year category.

Each year the award is given to a team who have ‘demonstrated cohesive teamwork to implement effective infection prevention initiatives'.

The RWT team have beaten others across the UK to make it into the top three.

Infection prevention is a vital part of keeping patients safe, and so having good policy and practices, as well as education and awareness around how diseases are spread, is important.

Vanessa Whatley, Head of Nursing Corporate Support Services, said: "It's fantastic to see the Infection Prevention Team nominated for this nationally sought after award.

"The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has been able to work with Public Health, the CCG and others to achieve low infection rates allowing the team to focus on prevention, rather than control, and take on new initiatives.

"A main feature of this submission was the protection of vulnerable care home residents from acquiring flu last winter.

"The IP team worked with the Rapid Intervention team in community nursing to ensure that exposed residents got timely prophylaxis and correct advice to the home on prevention of spread.

"This led to remarkably few admissions to the Trust from care home residents with flu and few significant outbreaks in care homes."

The winners will be announced during the Infection Prevention Society Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Monday 1st October 2018 at the Crowne Plaza, Glasgow.
