Lights, Camera, Action: My Journey with the Black Country Chamber and 'Playa Marina'"
Hi, I'm Richard Stephenson, a videographer, filmmaker, and editor. Three months ago, I joined the Black Country Chamber with the aim of expanding my network that supports and connects local businesses.
One of my first connections was with Matt Hickinbottom of Midlands Creative, who invited me to join a film crew under his supervision as Director of Photography. The project, a musical titled 'Playa Marina Alice’s Story,' marked my first experience with a large-scale production backed by executive producers. My university studies laid the groundwork, but this project provided invaluable insights into the workings of a professional film set.
It became my mission to immerse myself in every department, from sound and set design to wardrobe, gaining a well-rounded perspective on filmmaking. Under Matt's guidance, I mastered camera operations, lens selection, framing, and lighting techniques, essential skills in visual storytelling.
A standout moment was when I was asked to co-direct a few scenes, an opportunity that expanded my skill set and confidence. The rigorous schedule required quick problem-solving, and I thrived in this dynamic setting. It was a prime networking opportunity, allowing me to make valuable industry connections.
Collaborating with a diverse team refined my ability to work creatively with others, a crucial skill in the film industry. The camaraderie and shared passion for storytelling made this experience unforgettable. I'm eager for future collaborations as we gear up for the film's premiere later this year.
Special thanks to Matt for inviting me onto his crew and to Steve for bringing me into the Chamber. Their support has been invaluable, proving that with the right network, opportunities like this can become a reality.
