Manufacturing specialist Bowers & Jones Bowers & Jones has won a prestigious business of the year prize at the Express & Star Business Awards, a celebration of the region’s most outstanding companies.
The Bilston-based company was crowned small business of the year at a ceremony organised by the leading news brand for the Black Country at The Halls Wolverhampton on Thursday (June 5).
Finance Director Nicola Owen and Operations Director James Owen were presented with the award at the black tie event, held annually to recognise companies across the Black Country and Staffordshire that demonstrate commercial excellence, innovation and social impact.
In total, 12 prizes were awarded at the awards night, which was attended by business representatives from across the region as well as Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker.
The small business of the year category celebrated firms that met a range of criteria including clear strategy and vision, financial and team growth, as well as successfully overcoming challenges and excellence in their field along with a commitment to customer service.
The award marks another major milestone for the firm, which was recently honoured with the prestigious King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade.
Founded in 1955, Bowers & Jones has built a global reputation in roll tooling and rolling mill products.
The company has more than doubled its turnover since 2020 and serves more than 300 clients worldwide, with 80 per cent of its business coming from international markets.
Since acquiring the business in 2020 with Managing Director Jane Sommerville, Nicola, James and the team have navigated pandemic challenges and a major facility relocation to Vulcan Road, Bilston.
The company’s technology is now expanding into non-steel applications including electrical conduction and heating cable.
Commenting on the win, Managing Director Jane Sommerville said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this recognition from the leading news brand for the Black Country.
“It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, as well as the strength of West Midlands manufacturing.
“We are proud to represent the Black Country on both a national and international stage so we thank all our customers, suppliers and advisors for their support which has enabled our success.”
The award follows a remarkable year for Bowers & Jones, including wins at the Insider Media’s ‘Made in the Midlands’ Awards and the Black Country Chamber of Commerce Awards.
Jane was also recently invited to 10 Downing Street for a business reception hosted by the Prime Minister, in recognition of the company’s export achievements.
