Andy Burnham set out a ten-year plan built around lower energy costs, more power for the regions and a push to reindustrialise Britain in his first Labour Party Conference speech as Prime Minister.

In a wide ranging speech, Mr Burnham also announced his ambitions for reform around public control of water and housing, social care, the triple lock and Britain's relationship with Europe.

Responding to the speech, Chief Executive of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce Sarah Moorhouse said: “The Prime Minister asked why Britain can't lead the next industrial revolution, having led the first from the Midlands.

“Black Country businesses would say we can and many are already doing it, with our region home to many advanced manufacturing, engineering and new technology firms looking to develop and grow.

“There was plenty to like in Mr Burnham’s speech - a promise not to pile more costs on business and a pragmatic approach to Europe, which is where a lot of our members have been dealing with significant challenges post-Brexit.

“But energy is the big one. Black Country manufacturers are paying some of the highest energy bills in Europe, and many can't wait years for market reform. Taking VAT off electricity helps households and the smallest firms, but it won't touch the bills of most manufacturers.

“More power for the regions is welcome, but it has to mean real money and real levers for the West Midlands and in particular, our bostin Black Country.”
