Shortlists have been announced for the Regional Press Awards, with four MNA employees making the list.

The awards recognise the valiant work undertaken by the local and regional press during the coronavirus crisis. Shortlisted for the Designer of the Year: Newspapers award is Simon Hill for the Express & Star and Shropshire Star. The Sports Journalist of the Year – Daily/Sunday Papers award has seen Matt Maher of the Express & Star shortlisted, while Tim Sturgess and Tim Thursfield are in the running for the Daily/Sunday Photographer of the Year prize.

The winners will be revealed in a virtual announcement on 16 September. Editor-in-chief Martin Wright said each member of staff had shown dedication and commitment during a difficult year. “Congratulation to Simon, Matt and both Tims on making the shortlist – we are thrilled to see that they are being rewarded for their fantastic efforts,” he said. “The last year has been a turbulent one and our news teams have gone above and beyond to deliver high quality news to the communities around us.

“The regional press performs an important and vital service in ensuring its readers are kept well informed. This has been particularly challenging in the last year and I’m pleased that the pandemic hasn’t stopped the Society of Editors from recognising the incredible professionalism and sheer determination shown over the last year.”

Dawn Alford, executive director of the Society of Editors which organises the awards, said: “Congratulations to those who made the shortlist amongst an incredible standard of entries, and in a year where demand for trusted news has never been higher. We are hugely grateful to judges from across the industry whose time and dedication has enabled the remarkable and varied achievements of those journalists to be recognised.

“The coronavirus crisis has shown more than ever the vital importance of the regional press as the beating heart of communities across the UK. It is clear from these shortlists that the local and regional media has risen to the challenge.”
