Sandwell College is offering more than 50 courses to support adults with their career plans. Learners can potentially save thousands of pounds getting into their dream career this new year by training for free*.

The college has been allocated funding from the National Skills Fund as part of the government’s Plan for Jobs. Courses in a range of different areas from teaching and social care to high level management, which would normally cost up to £5000, are free to students who meet the eligibility criteria. Programmes have been designed specifically for people looking to change career, upskill or get back into work.

Set to start in January, the varied programme of Level 3 qualifications features Adult Care, Coding, Cyber Security, Dental Nursing, Assessing Vocational Achievement, Wood Occupations, Painting and Decorating, Engineering, Light Vehicle Maintenance and Vehicle Accident Repair (Paint or Body). These courses are free for anyone aged over 19 who does not yet have a full Level 3 qualification (equivalent to an advanced technical certificate or diploma or A Levels) or higher and who lives in a West Midlands Combined Authority postcode area.

Chartered Management Institute online and face-to-face courses, including fast-track and flexi study options, are free to adult residents in West Midlands Combined Authority postcode areas. CMI Bitesize courses from Brexit – Leading Change and Risk to Managing Projects are also on offer. Concessions and Advanced Learner Loans are available to fund study for those who are not eligible for free funding.

Head of the Professions and Innovations Academy at Sandwell College, Bridgette Bennett, says: “We’re delighted to be offering free courses to adults to help you gain the valuable skills to improve your job prospects. It represents a long-term commitment by the government to remove the age constraints and financial barriers for adults looking for their first Level 3 qualification so that they can access training to enable them to progress. So, whether you’re looking to start studying again, re-train, upskill or any other reason, we’ve got a course for you - and the best bit? It could be free!”

Employers increasingly require candidates with Level 2 Maths and English qualifications. Adult learners who need to improve their job prospects and work towards GCSEs in English and Maths can now do so for free at Sandwell. Curriculum lead Naomi Knott says: “We meet our students at their own specific starting point and work with them to achieve their goal of completing a new qualification, and potentially making a bold step towards a new life.”
