Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is a term used in education to describe children and young people who require additional support to help them reach their full potential. This can include a wide range of needs, such as learning differences, physical disabilities, or social, economical and mental health challenges.

Why SEND is so Important

SEND is a key focus within the education system, as schools and colleges continue to support a growing number of learners with additional needs. In the UK, around 1.7 million pupils are identifies as having SEND. This highlights the importance of creating inclusive environments where every learner has the opportunity to succeed.

How Learners are Supported

To support those with SEND, schools adapt their approach to meet individual needs.

This may include:

  • Adjusting teaching methods.
  • Providing additional resources.
  • Offering tailored support through staff such as Teaching Assistants.

Teaching Assistants play a vital role in this process, often working closely with learners to provide one-to-one or small group support.
