Step into September with Black Country Chamber

This month, our team have been busy with the Step into September challenge to raise funds for our charity of the year 2024/25, YMCA Black Country Group.

The local charity provides support for vulnerable children and young people, resources for local families, and health and wellbeing services too.

We surpassed our original goal to complete 1,509,990 steps (the equivalent of climbing the Three Peaks), and have continued to rack up steps, but we need your help to increase donations so the YMCA can continue their vital work across the region.

See where some of the Chamber team have headed to take on the challenge so far as we near the end of the month.

  • The Great Orme in Wales
  • Family walks in the Black Country
  • Ambergate in Derbyshire
  • Darlaston Football Club
  • Osborne Manor at the Isle of Wight
  • Molineux Stadium in Wolverhampton
  • Catching the sunrise in Telford
  • Sandwell Valley near the riding club
  • Boscastle national trust in Cornwall

We caught up with some of the team to see how they are finding the challenge…

Lorna has found the challenge easy when on holiday, but difficult when back at work sat at her desk. During her holiday, she followed a path that suddenly turned into a stream near Ambergate in Derbyshire.

The challenge has been a good way for Lauren to think outside the box and discover new places to visit to get her steps in. A morning walk sets her up for the day and increasing her step count will be something she will continue to do after September too. The best walk so far was hiking up a cliff in Boscastle National Trust, Cornwall to capture the beautiful view. (That took a few thousand steps to get to the top and back down!)

Keeping the ball rolling, Richard has been enjoying completing the challenge – and the team being quietly competitive about getting as many steps in as possible… Though, his favourite moment so far is playing in the Wolves Foundation Charity football tournament which went a long way by racking up 25,000 steps in a day.

Gemma E was looking forward to the challenge before it started, as it’s a great way to stay motivated while moving. With the weather suddenly becoming very autumnal, the challenge helped with getting outdoors and increasing the step count! Walking around London for three days for a catch-up with old friends was also a major highlight.

From the get-go, Owenia was ready to step up to the challenge, so started strong with 16,698 steps on the first day (still her current record). It’s been a blast to walk to work in the mornings with our playlist, which includes everything from Walk the Dinosaur to Walking on Sunshine.

Do you want to support the challenge?

September is not over yet – join the challenge and donate! For some motivation, you can see the full playlist here.

Every donation counts and will go towards making a world of difference to the lives of people living in the region who receive support from the YMCA Black Country Group.
