This article underscores the critical importance of companies supporting their communities, particularly younger generations. We hope it serves as a compelling example of why such initiatives are essential.
The decisions and experiences of today’s youth will shape the trajectory of their lives. One might become a future politician, fighting for change, while another aspires to be a life-saving surgeon, hoping to achieve the grades needed in their science subjects. Our youth represent the future of our society, and investing in their development is not just a noble cause but a strategic move. By equipping young people with the skills and experience they need, we are laying the foundation for a brighter, more innovative future.
In an era dominated by social media and heightened societal pressures, the educational system has become more competitive than ever, meaning students need all the help they can get. An NHS study in 2020 found that one in six young people in the UK have experienced a mental health problem, a significant increase from previous years. Each year seems increasingly challenging for children, with issues created by adults negatively impacting young people who are just starting out.
According to a survey by Virgin Media O2, 74% of applicants for entry-level roles had their applications rejected due to a lack of work experience. If companies are unwilling to hire those without experience, how can experience ever be gained in the first place?
Recognising this gap, our company has begun working closely with Blue Coat Church of England Academy, Walsall, to provide comprehensive support through CV workshops, one-on-one mock interviews, and immersive work experience days, preparing students for the workforce and inspiring them to pursue their career goals.
Our collaboration with Blue Coat began this year, coinciding with our 90th anniversary, as we sought opportunities to support our local community more actively. We aim to bridge the gap between education and employment, offering our support where it's needed most and hope to make this a regular practice in the years to come.
CV Workshops
Our Business Development Director, Anita Wright, recently visited the school to support Year 12 students in a CV workshop. Students brought their CVs, which Anita and other professionals from supporting companies reviewed. Through personalised feedback, students learned how to effectively highlight their strengths and experiences.
Mock Interviews
Earlier this year, we supported the school by conducting mock interviews with Year 10 students. These interviews simulated real job interviews, giving students the opportunity to practice their responses and receive constructive feedback. This hands-on experience is invaluable in boosting their confidence and improving their performance for future interviews. This was a new and highly valuable component of the students' Year 10 Futures Day, a dedicated off-timetable day focused on employability workshops, apprenticeships, and local career opportunities.
Work Experience
We recently hosted two bright young students for a work experience day, giving them first hand exposure to the world of work. They spent time with employees from various sectors, gaining transferable skills relevant to their chosen career paths. We provided the school with constructive feedback on their performance and areas for improvement. This helps ensure that they can be the best version of themselves for any future prospects.
Supporting the younger generation is not only a social responsibility but also a strategic investment for businesses. Today's students are tomorrow's innovators, leaders, and customers. By engaging with youth, companies can build a talent pipeline tailored to their specific needs, enhance community relations, and boost their corporate social responsibility profile. Moreover, employees involved in mentorship programmes often report higher job satisfaction, finding purpose in nurturing young talents.
Investing in youth development has far-reaching benefits for the economy as well. It reduces unemployment, fosters innovation, and creates a more skilled and adaptable workforce. By equipping young people with the necessary skills and experiences, businesses help shape a future workforce that is well-prepared to tackle the challenges of tomorrow, ensuring long-term economic growth and stability.
We are enthusiastic about the future of Power Utilities Group and look forward to expanding our reach to even more students, equipping them with the tools they need to excel. This article underscores the critical importance of companies supporting their communities, particularly younger generations. We hope it serves as a compelling example of why such initiatives are essential.
We encourage more businesses to follow suit and collaborate with us in creating a comprehensive support system for students nationwide. Whether through mentorship, internships, or financial support, every contribution makes a meaningful impact. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for all.
