Leading Midlands’ landlord whg has been shortlisted for a national award recognising the positive impact it makes in local communities.

The Walsall-based housing association has been named a finalist in the Community Impact category at the Building Communities Awards 2020.

The award recognises those organisations that have made a huge difference to the lives of local people.

whg recognises the importance of being more than just a landlord and in the last year has spearheaded a range of innovative initiatives to target poverty and social exclusion among its customers. Its work to create thriving, sustainable communities generated social value of £41.9m in 2018/2019.

Projects have included a pilot women into construction training scheme called Project UPLIFT, which has supported long term unemployed who had previously struggled to get into work due to family commitments, skills and experience.

Last year whg also launched a dedicated Schools Programme. Working with 11 schools, whg offered early morning family breakfast clubs and after school clubs as well as structured courses in Playground Leadership to promote healthy active lifestyles and fun physical activity.

Corporate Director Fay Shanahan said: “At whg, our ambition is to be more than just a good landlord and we have continued to promote health and prosperity where we can make a difference.  In 2018 more than 2000 people accessed our health and wellbeing services, which help customers live a healthy lifestyle. An additional 1,271 people improved their employment prospects through the support of our Employment and Training programmes, while 682 customers developed their financial and digital skills through the Black Country Click Start programme.

“We’re delighted to be shortlisted for this award, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of colleagues.”

whg will find out if it has been successful at an awards ceremony in Leicester on Friday 28th February.
