What is a Digital Learning Designer, and why does it matter for the future of L&D?
In simple terms, a Digital Learning Designer creates engaging, accessible digital learning experiences; from e-learning modules and videos to interactive resources and blended programmes.
They combine learning design principles with user experience, technology and creativity to help people learn better at work. We’ve created a new video to bring this to life, sharing what the programme looks like in practice and how it supports both learners and employers. The Digital Learning Designer apprenticeship standard is still relatively new, officially launched in 2023 as a Level 5 programme and the first apprenticeship to be endorsed by the Association for Learning Technology (ALT).
Because it’s new, awareness (and uptake!) is still low nationally compared to long-established apprenticeships. That means: Many L&D teams don’t yet realise this route exists Organisations are still recruiting “learning technologists” or “content creators” without a clear development pathway Learners who love design and technology often don’t know that “digital learning designer” could be a career for them In other words, the apprenticeship is underutilised, even though it’s built precisely for the way modern workplace learning is moving.
For early adopters, that’s a real opportunity: to develop talent in a role that will only become more central to the future of L&D. Watch the video, then explore the apprenticeship. If you’re asking “What does a Digital Learning Designer actually do day-to-day?” or “How could this support our L&D strategy?”, our new video is a great place to start.
From there, you can explore the full apprenticeship offer – including the modules, timeline and support learners receive – on our dedicated programme page.
