Ensure your early years setting is compliant with the new EYFS-mandated paediatric first aid requirements by enrolling your staff in our accredited training courses, designed to provide essential emergency care skills and meet regulatory standards.

Ensuring the safety and well-being of children in early years settings is a top priority. With the new EYFS-mandated paediatric first aid training requirements coming into effect on September 1, 2025, it’s more important than ever to ensure your staff are qualified and prepared to handle medical emergencies.

What Does the New EYFS-Mandated Paediatric First Aid Training Mean?

From 1st September 2025, all early years providers must have at least one staff member with current paediatric first aid (PFA) certification on-site at all times when children are present. Additionally, staff who obtained Level 2 and/or Level 3 qualifications since June 30, 2016, must obtain their PFA qualification within three months of starting work, and the certificate must be renewed every three years.

This change ensures that early years settings comply with regulatory standards and are prepared for any emergency. The EYFS framework specifies that paediatric first aid training is vital for those working with children aged 0-5 years, ensuring staff can act swiftly in critical situations.

Why Is Paediatric First Aid Essential?

Paediatric first aid training equips staff with the skills to handle medical emergencies, such as choking, allergic reactions, and seizures. Beyond emergency care, it also helps staff manage the emotional and behavioural needs of children, creating a calm, supportive environment. Understanding the developmental needs of children, including those with neurodivergent traits, is key to providing comprehensive care.

Paediatric First Aid Qualifications: Level 3 is a Must

Since 2016, Level 3 paediatric first aid qualifications have been required for staff in responsible roles, such as room leaders and managers. This qualification provides advanced training on medical conditions like asthma, meningitis, and child-specific treatments, ensuring staff can offer the highest level of care.
