On 4th May 2017 voters throughout the West Midlands will head to the polls to elect the region's first Mayor.

The candidates in the running to become the first West Midlands Mayor are:

  • James Burn, Green Party
  • Pete Durnell, UKIP
  • Beverley Nielsen, Liberal Democrats

The elected Mayor will chair the newly formed West Midlands Combined Authority and hold specific powers over strategy, budget setting and transport. They will have the potential to become a powerful figurehead and champion for the region.

Ahead of the elections, the Black Country Chamber of Commerce will be working closely with both the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and Coventry & Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce to promote a pro-business agenda and raise awareness of the elections amongst our membership. Please click here to read the manifesto that we have collectively published, entitled Business Priorities 2017: Vision for a West Midlands Mayor.

As part of our engagement strategy with each of the Mayoral candidates, we will be interviewing them on their vision for a range of issues that are affecting businesses within the Black Country, including transport infrastructure, economic growth and Brexit. Furthermore, in the run-up to the election we will be working to deliver a series of high-profile hustings and debates along with West Midlands Elects. Please click here for more details on these events, including information on where and when they will be taking place.

The West Midlands Combined Authority is a partnership between 12 Local Authorities and 3 Local Enterprise Partnerships. It has the ability to make decisions and wield a selection of powers across a larger scale and wider, regional geography than the organisation within it can do alone.
