With around 300 people in attendance, the Black Country Chamber of Commerce Business is Good for the Black Country Awards Dinner 2014 was better than ever. The Dinner which took place on 20th November at Wolverhampton Racecourse acknowledged and celebrated local business success.

Ninder Johal, President of Black Country Chamber of Commerce, said “I would like to congratulate all our winners and thank the many more businesses who have taken part in the awards this year. Our judges were very impressed with the high standard and diversity of award entries. They had some very difficult decisions to make. It was great to see so many people celebrating Black Country business success.”

Aspirational Business Award sponsored by GrowthAccelerator

The Judges were looking for a company that stands out in terms of its commitment to continuous improvement, growth strategy and innovation.

The Judges felt that winner George Green LLP stood out because of their innovative approach to helping early stage businesses succeed with the use of an online Growth Hub of resources. They really look to give something back to the local area by supporting a local charity and acting as a role model for those aspiring to enter the legal profession.


Customer Service Award sponsored by Paycare

Applicants were encouraged to apply for this award if they are a company that sees customer service as a vital part of their business, providing the very best standard of service to all customers to increase customer satisfaction.

Winner Ultra Furniture Limited impressed the judges with their very proactive approach to customer service. They demonstrated their hard work to create better relationships with suppliers and showed that the proactive customer service approach is embedded throughout the business.


International Trade Award sponsored by Wolverhampton Racecourse

Companies that applied for this award see export as a vital part of their business, have a future export strategy, and overcome obstacles to trade.

International Trade Award winner Zaun Limited revealed that they focused on a very well planned strategic move into various international trade areas throughout the world, concentrating in the Middle East and Dubai. They planned their ambitious growth by grabbing the opportunities given by such major events as the Olympics 2012.


People Development Award sponsored by Eaton’s Ex Innovations Business

Applicants for this award see development of their employees as a key part of their company culture. The Judges looked for a company that continuously tries to support and improve the human resource aspect of their business.

Sandwell Women’s Aid picked up the People Development Award. They were seen as a standout candidate in terms of motivation of their people. The judges were impressed with their local campaigns and the way they had gone above and beyond what might have been expected of them. Their recent journey was seen as truly inspirational.


Manufacturer of the Year Award sponsored by Crowe Clark Whitehill

This award highlights companies that focus on production, innovation and meeting demand as well as investing in people.

Manufacturer of the Year Award winner Ultra Furniture Limited have developed an excellent product range. Innovation is key to them and this is supported by all their local employees. They were a stand out applicant who puts quality first.


Service Provider of the Year Award sponsored by BDO LLP

This award is for a service provider that has clear future objectives, has overcome obstacles faced and works hard to exceed customer expectations.

The Service Provider of the Year Award was collected by DPD (UK). DPD (UK) inspire their employees and have therefore sustained positive growth through their people. Their values are at the heart of the organisation and their investment in their staff is reflected by their success.  

Business of the Year Award sponsored by the University of Wolverhampton

This award celebrates companies that are determined to succeed and excel in business. They should cover all aspects of business to a high standard from customer service to people development - and they should strive to continually improve. The Judges were looking for a company that is hard working and passionate about not just business growth but also people and the wealth of the economy.

Business of the Year voestalpine Metsec plc is the UK’s largest specialist manufacturer of cold rolled sections, predominantly selling into the construction market. They inspired the judges by their investment in people, processes and equipment. Not only are they at the leading edge in terms of manufacturing technology, industry legislation and sustainable manufacturing, but voestalpine Metsec plc stood out with their dedication to continually develop their people. A company that truly makes the Black Country a great place to work.
