The Haven Wolverhampton Take the Plunge as a Team of 19 Take Part in a Skydive World Record Attempt.

haven19 hopefuls from Wolverhampton signed up to be a part of a sky-high world record attempt all in aid of local charity The Haven. The group was formed from staff, volunteers and supporters and they all arrived on Saturday 11th June at Langar, Nottingham airfield ready to jump out of a plane to raise vital funds for the charity.

The Haven had teamed up with various charities across the UK, with the aim of the day to break the World Record for the number of skydives in 24 hours. The current record was 330 and with an excess of 350 skydivers signed up to take part in the day, they were on course for breaking the record.

The air was full of nerves and excitement when the team arrived at Langar Airfield and for all but one of The Haven’s skydivers, this was their first time jumping so they weren’t sure what to expect.

Sadly, typical British summertime weather and thick cloud coverage drastically impacted on the day meaning that skydivers across the country were unable to complete their jump. However, 16 of #TeamHaven were able to go ahead and, after their morning training session, they got themselves geared up and into the plane ready for a challenge of a lifetime.

Sarah Birch, supporter of The Haven said “I was nervous when I signed up, but now it’s here, I’m excited, I just want to do it!”

The challenge involved flying up to 10,000ft before exiting the plane and freefalling for 5,000ft at 120mph. As soon as the parachute opens, skydivers can take in beautiful English countryside views as they glide back down to the ground.

Jade Secker, Community Fundraising Officer at The Haven said, “They were all absolutely amazing and really enjoyed the experience. Whilst everyone is a little gutted that the weather effected the world record attempt, spirits remain high as all of Team Haven are so proud of what they have achieved – and so they should be.”

“We are immensely proud and grateful to everyone who took part. So far they have raised in excess of £3,200 and sponsorship is still rolling in. This amount of money will make such a significant difference to the lives of the women and children we support in Wolverhampton through domestic abuse and homelessness. Thank you to you all.”

Team Haven are already preparing for their next big challenge and are taking on a trek across the Great Wall of China in September 2017.
