The Kinks, Courtroom Drama, Circus and Wild Elephants in New Season at The Grand Theatre

Photo Kevin CumminsToday Wolverhampton Grand Theatre announced 7 new shows for 2017 – including the smash hit West End Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon, the world premiere of courtroom drama The Verdict and direct from Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild.

Chinese New Year Extravaganza returns to the Grand Theatre with a unique and exciting show of cultural spectacle to welcome the start of the Year of the Rooster. The show features a team of performers showcasing incredible Chinese performing arts. From the cheerful spirit of the auspicious Lion Dance, to the majestic and awe-inspiring contortion, the show is a colourful display of Chinese cultural tradition. Witness the daring stunts of Chinese acrobatics alongside elegant Chinese dance, energetic kung fu performance, a highly skilled puppeteer that can perform the ancient magic of Face Changing and more on Sun 12 February.

Seven Drunken Nights is a brand new tour from the creators of Essence Of Ireland and Ireland’s Call The Musical. It brings to life the music of Ireland’s favourite sons – ‘The Dubliners’. Telling the story of a career spanning 50 years and evoking the spirit of Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Barney McKenna, Jim McCann, Ciaran Bourke and John Sheahan, this hugely talented cast of musicians and singers bring the music of this iconic group to life.

With classics as The Wild Rover, The Black Velvet Band, The Irish Rover, Molly Malone, Finnegan’s Wake, McAlpines Fusileers, Raglan Road and of course The Seven Drunken Nights, this celebration of the music of The Dubliners is for one night only on Sat 11 March.

Real Diamond is a tribute to the songwriter and living legend, Neil Diamond. Neil is best known for his beautiful romantic ballads.... Songs like "Love on the Rocks", "I am....I Said" and "Play Me"; and of course, no great Diamond tribute show, like John Hylton's Real Diamond, would ever leave them out! But, the rest of this night will be filled with the rhythm, power and beat of the foot tappers, the hand clappers and the headbangers on Sat 15 April.

Cirque Du Hilarious sees Clive Webb & Danny Adams back to the stage and once again bring madness and mayhem with a brand new show for 2017. Dubbed "The Superstars of Slapstick", father and son Clive and Danny's particular brand of lunacy runs throughout the show, causing havoc and chaos on stage, and screams of laughter from all the family. Joined by village idiot Michael Potts and a full supporting cast including the Cirque du Hilarious Showgirls, Rock Band Clownforce and International Circus Acts on Sun 16 April.

Featuring some of The Kinks’ best-loved songs, including You Really Got Me, Waterloo Sunset and Lola, Sunny Afternoon tells the story of the early life of Ray Davies and the rise to stardom of The Kinks. The Kinks exploded onto the 60s music scene with a raw energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next? Find out between Tue 18 – Sat 22 April.

The world stage premiere of The Verdict is the stunning courtroom thriller made famous by the five times OSCAR nominated Sidney Lumet film with Paul Newman and James Mason. It stars Clive Mantle and Jack Shepherd from Tue 2 – Sat 6 May. 

Clive Mantle has been a household favourite for over three decades, with regular roles in hit television series Robin Of Sherwood, The Vicar Of Dibley, Mount Pleasant, White Van Man, Game of Thrones and of course Dr Mike Barratt in both Casualty and Holby City. Jack Shepherd is one of our most celebrated actors and has a distinguished career in theatre, television and film spanning over fifty years. His awards include a Laurence Olivier Theatre Award, a Plays and Players London Critics’ Award, and a Time Out Award. He is best known for his portrayal of Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in the hugely popular television series Wycliffe.

The cast also includes Richard Walsh (London's Burning), Peter Harding, Cassie Bancroft, Tom Roberts (Emmerdale / 2point4 Children), Veronica Quilligan, Okon Jones, Michael Lunney, Nuala Walsh, Eugenia Caruso and Jog Maher.

Running Wild received its London premiere at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and comes to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre as part of its first ever UK tour from Tue 6 – Sat 10 June. It tells the story of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, based on a true story, brought to life in an award-winning production, which has been described by critics as ‘inspiring’, ‘evocative, ‘imaginative’ and ‘life-affirming’.

Tickets for these shows are on sale exclusively to Friends Of The Grand from 11am on Monday 3 October and are on public sale from 11am on Thursday 6 October.
