Automotive Tech Firm Gets Nod for Shirley Workshop

Automotive technology giant ZF has received the thumbs up to build a temporary workshop at its base in Shirley in order to complete a contract with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

The company operates from eight buildings at The Green, near the A34 in Shirley. Its powertrain business, known as ZF Division P, has been working with JLR since January 2017.

A planning statement from ZF said the current facility is spread over a number of buildings and is therefore "inefficient".

"It is not possible under the existing layout to locate office space close to the existing workshops," it added. "The proposed facility enables ZF Division P to do the required vehicle works satisfying demand from JLR, whilst a permanent replacement building is developed."

The application was approved by Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council on the grounds that the structure is removed and the land is returned to its current state by 31 December 2020.

ZF said the temporary facility will be required for two years. Its leases at The Green expire in November 2020.

"This provides ZF with time to examine options for a permanent solution, but will also ensure that this important research and development contract can be secured," the company added.
