Grand Theatre's Aladdin Wins with What's On

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre is celebrating bumper success at the What’s On Reader Awards.

The theatre was named Best Arts/Theatre Venue in Wolverhampton and the Black Country and Aladdin was awarded Best Pantomime in the Midlands 2016/17.

More than 45,000 votes were cast in the What’s On Readers Awards.

Black Country favourite Doreen Tipton, the Lazy Empress in Aladdin, was voted Best Midlands Personality, beating Julie Walters.  This is her second award in a matter of weeks, having been crowned Best Pantomime Newcomer at the Great British Pantomime Awards. She returns to the Grand with her brand-new live show Doreen: Rise Of The Yam-Yam on Sunday 22nd October.

Shows appearing at the Grand Theatre also had success at the awards.

Birmingham Stage Company’s production of David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny, which appeared at the Grand Theatre last week, won Best Home-Produced Show in the Midlands.

The sensational feel-good musical Mamma Mia! also won Best Touring Musical, ahead of its three-week run at the Grand from Tuesday 6 – Saturday 24 February 2018.

Vicky Price, Associate Director of Development and Communications, said: “We are thrilled to win both Best Pantomime and Best Arts/Theatre Venue in Wolverhampton and the Black Country.

"Aladdin had something for everybody. Lisa Riley brought the Strictly Come Dancing element. Joe McElderry had a wonderful voice. We had the children’s entertainment, traditional pantomime fun from Ian Adams and of course Doreen with her Black Country humour. It really was a recipe for success.

“And following last summer’s refurbishment of the Front of House areas, the magic of theatre begins as soon as you walk through the doors.

“Thank you to everybody who voted for us and your continued support.”

The Grand Theatre is hoping to beat its Aladdin success with this year’s pantomime Jack And The Beanstalk.

Tickets for Doreen: Rise Of The Yam-Yam, Jack And The Beanstalk and Mamma Mia! are now on sale at the Grand Theatre Box Office in person, by calling 01902 429212 or online at
