Celebrating 80 in Style!

DZG Celebrate 80The rain didn’t dampen spirits on Saturday as Dudley Zoological Gardens (DZG) celebrated their 80th anniversary in style!

Around 300 supporters braved the weather to join them as they raised money towards a new outdoor enclosure for critically endangered Bornean orangutans during their Take a Walk on the Wild Side event.

Donning a variety of colourful fancy dress costumes, visitors took part in the sponsored 5k walk around the zoo site and all received a medal and certificate at the end for their great efforts.

During the afternoon the zoo turned back the clock to celebrate eight decades of DZG, by welcoming retro singers The Glamophones, who entertained the crowds in the castle courtyard alongside clowns, Flip and Dippy and there was also a display of old DZG photographs and information to view courtesy of Dudley Archives.

And no celebration would be complete without cake and DZG Customer Services Team Member, Laura Partridge, produced a show stopper with her four tier spectacle, with all visitors given a slice!

Zoo Director, Derek Grove, commented: “We had a fabulous day celebrating 80 years of Dudley Zoo with the hundreds of visitors who supported our fourth charity walk.

“DZG is a very different place today to the DZG eight decades ago as we continue to expand and improve the facilities for more than 200 animal species and the hundreds of thousands of visitors who visit year-on-year, helping us raise funds and awareness for vital in-situ and ex-situ conservation projects around the world.

“We’d like to thank our visitors who continue to support our mission to create a better future for wildlife. We’re proud to have such loyal supporters, many who have grown up with DZG, and we expect to have raised thousands of pounds from the fundraiser with every penny going towards helping us transform the orangutan enclosure.

“We’re excited for the future, so let’s see what the next 80 years holds!”

Any outstanding sponsorship can be sent to DZG Marketing Assistant Louise Curtis by post, phone or dropped into the Safari Gift Shop before the end of the month. If you didn’t get chance to take part in the walk, you can still donate to the orangutan appeal through our Justgiving page. Simply text DZ0037 and your desired amount to 70070.
