Rishi Sunak will be the new PM

The Conservative Party have found their new leader and the Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP will become the UK’s third Prime Minister this year and its fifth since 2016.

The former Chancellor of the Exchequer who oversaw the UK economy as it navigated the COVID-19 pandemic and exited the EU, enters Number 10 during a period of financial instability. The Prime Minister-designate will meet HM The King and be asked to form the next government.

Reacting to the news, Sarah Moorhouse, CEO of the Black Country Chamber of Commerce said:

“On behalf of our members, we would like to congratulate Rishi Sunak. The appointment of Mr Sunak, our first British Asian and Hindu Prime Minister which takes place during Diwali is an important moment in our nation’s history. This is something we should all celebrate, reflect upon and be proud of.

“The new Prime Minister enters office during a period of great uncertainty for many businesses and their employees, compounded over recent weeks by the political and economic uncertainty caused by the mini-budget and short premiership of his predecessor.

“It is imperative that Mr Sunak and his new administration restores confidence in the markets, tackles rising inflation and the upfront costs of doing business, establishing the environment where our members and firms across the Black Country can grow and prosper. We need a clear, long-term vision and this means setting out fully costed plans to deal with the big issues facing businesses.

“As the region’s largest and longest-established business support organisation, we will continue to ensure that the voice of Chamber members is heard within the new government and look forward to learning more about the new Prime Minister’s plans.”
